How VAT and duty work on an AliExpress order to the UK

The UK moved VAT collection on small parcels to the point of sale in 2021, and AliExpress is one of the marketplaces that collects it. What you pay depends on the goods in the consignment, not on shipping:

Two details trip people up. First, several separate orders that happen to arrive on the same day are still separate consignments, so each is judged against £135 on its own. Second, a single order over £135 isn't split by the seller to dodge the line; it's handled at the border, where Royal Mail or the courier collects the balance and adds its own fee before handing it over.

Verdict: Keep each AliExpress order under £135 and the VAT on the order page is the whole tax bill.

Who delivers AliExpress parcels in London, and how long it takes

The guaranteed delivery date on each order page matters more than any average. If it passes with no parcel, you can open a dispute and AliExpress refunds under its non-delivery rule. For London flats, put the flat number on the first address line and add a UK mobile: couriers on the faster lines will ring or text before giving up, and Royal Mail leaves a card with the local delivery office if nobody answers.

Watch for text messages asking for a 'customs fee' on an order you paid VAT on at checkout. Genuine Royal Mail charges come with a grey fee-to-pay card and are paid on Royal Mail's own site; nothing about an under-£135 AliExpress order should trigger one.

One UK haul, two routes

Say you want five items from five different AliExpress stores at £18 each, free shipping. On AliExpress that's five orders, five parcels and VAT on each at checkout. Buy the same things on Taobao and Weidian through an agent and the goods cost less, about £63 at domestic prices, but you add around £22 of freight and agent fees and ship them in one box:

The agent box comes out about £6.00 cheaper here, and it's one delivery instead of five. The gap closes quickly with fewer items or heavier ones, and it reverses if anything needs returning: AliExpress offers 15-day free returns on eligible items, while an agent's return window ends when the box leaves China. Getting AliExpress orders to London without surprises

• Check the price is shown 'VAT included' on the order summary before paying. If it isn't, the store may be shipping from outside AliExpress's collection scheme.
• Group items from one store into one order; each store ships its own parcel, but AliExpress's combined delivery can merge some eligible items.
• Screenshot the listing and the delivery promise. Both are evidence if the item differs or never arrives.
• Convert sizes before ordering. UK shoe sizes are about one smaller than US men's; the size converter handles EU, US and UK.
• Know what can't go back free: underwear, socks, food, batteries, customised items and anything AliExpress prohibits.

GOV.UK has said the £135 relief will be repealed by October 2028 at the latest. When it goes, small parcels will be assessed for duty too, and the gap between five little parcels and one combined box will widen.
