GST on AliExpress orders to Australia

Since 2018, overseas marketplaces have collected GST on low-value goods sold to Australian consumers. AliExpress is registered to do this, so the tax shows on your order before you pay:

The A$1,000 test applies to each item's value at the time of sale, so it rarely matters for ordinary AliExpress shopping. It does matter for one-off expensive items such as a camera or a laptop, which go through formal clearance and can take extra days. If you're an ABN-registered business, you can give AliExpress your ABN and it won't charge GST, but you then account for it yourself.

Verdict: For almost every AliExpress order to Australia, the GST on the order page is the full tax bill.

Delivery to Sydney: carriers and timing

Most AliExpress parcels reach Sydney through Australia Post, and the local tracking number starts working once the parcel clears. Missed deliveries go to the nearest Post Office or a Parcel Locker if you've registered for MyPost Deliveries, which is worth doing if you're out during the day. Unit blocks without a parcel room are the usual reason parcels bounce back.

Because transit is long, keep an eye on the guaranteed delivery date on each order. If it passes, AliExpress will refund an undelivered order after a dispute; if the item arrives different from the listing, you have 15 days to claim.

One Sydney haul, two routes

The agent box saves only about A$7.70 here — far less than the same haul to Europe, because freight to Australia eats most of the domestic-price saving. The balance tips toward an agent with more items or with things AliExpress doesn't carry. For one to four items, AliExpress's free shipping and 15-day free returns on eligible items usually win.

Ordering from AliExpress to Australia: what helps

• Check the GST line on the order summary; if a listing doesn't show one, ask the store why before paying.
• Avoid biosecurity trouble. Seeds, plant material, wooden items with bark and some foods are restricted and may be seized at the border.
• Batteries and aerosols often ship on slower lines or not at all to Australia; the listing's shipping options will say.
• Australian clothing sizes differ from both US and EU: a women's AU 10 is roughly a US 6. The size converter decodes Chinese labels.
• Track every order in one place — with 3–4 week transit times, several orders overlap. The order tracker counts down each dispute deadline.
