Straight answer

Temu, owned by PDD Holdings and in the US since September 2022, sells cheap, mostly unbranded everyday goods. Two things set it apart from AliExpress now. Since May 2025, US orders have come from local sellers rather than straight from China, a change made as the US ended duty-free treatment for small Chinese parcels. And its returns are generous on paper — 90 days for most items — but only the first return from each order is free; further returns from the same order cost $7.99 each, per a September 2026 ConsumerAffairs guide. AliExpress offers 15 days of free returns on eligible items. Neither stocks the streetwear most 'Temu spreadsheet' searchers are after.

How has Temu's model changed, and what does it mean against AliExpress?

Temu began, like AliExpress, by shipping small parcels from China directly to customers. In May 2025, as the US ended the duty-free treatment of small parcels from China, Temu switched US orders to sellers holding stock locally. For a US shopper that changes delivery times and who pays the import cost: it's handled upstream, before the goods reach you.

AliExpress took a different path. It still ships many orders from China, shows import charges at checkout on a growing share of US orders, and runs its own consolidation programmes. So for a US buyer, the choice is now between a local-stock marketplace (Temu) and a cross-border one that prices duty in (AliExpress).

Temu's return policy has an unusual structure that's worth understanding before a big order:

The $7.99 rule rewards bundling returns: if you're sending back several items from one order, send them together in the first return. AliExpress's model is different — a shorter window, but each eligible item's return is free, and exclusions are similar (underwear, socks, food, batteries, customised items). For a single item, Temu's 90 days is more forgiving; for a multi-item order with several misses, AliExpress can be cheaper to fix.

Verdict: One-item orders: Temu's 90 days is kinder. Multi-item orders with several returns: AliExpress's per-item free returns cost less.

What a 'Temu spreadsheet' is really looking for

'Temu spreadsheet' searches mostly lead to lists of streetwear, trainers and designer-style bags. Temu doesn't carry much of that; its catalogue is built on unbranded everyday goods. AliExpress carries more small brands and more fashion, but the specific shops on community spreadsheets are usually on Weidian, which neither platform sells.

There's also a difference in who's selling. Temu's model gives the platform tight control over listings and prices, which keeps the catalogue uniform and cheap. AliExpress is a looser marketplace of independent stores, which is why it carries more niche and small-brand items, and why store ratings matter more there.

So a practical split for most buyers looks like this: household basics and gadgets on Temu or AliExpress, whichever is cheaper that day; fashion finds from specific shops through an agent, where QC photos show the actual item before it ships.
